When we created Bonta, our mission wasn’t just to design beautiful performance wear, it was to make it safe.

That meant going deep into the science of textiles, asking tough questions, and choosing every fabric with intention. Along the way, we discovered a surprising truth that most people, and even many brands, aren’t talking about:

Some of the softest fabrics you wear may be among the least healthy.

What Is Brushed Polyester?

Brushed polyester is exactly what it sounds like: a synthetic fabric that’s been treated with fine wire bristles to rough up and disturb the surface. This process creates that irresistibly soft, cotton-like finish that feels amazing to the touch.
It’s used by many major activewear brands. On the surface, it seems like a win. But here’s what’s happening behind the scenes:

1. Brushing Breaks the Fiber Structure
When polyester is brushed, it becomes softer by design but only because the fibers have been broken down. This fiber damage leads to excessive shedding, especially during wear, friction, and washing.

2. That Shedding Equals Microplastics
When those synthetic fibers break off, they often become particulates of microplastics which are tiny plastic particles that can enter our water, our air, and even our bodies.
Research has already found microplastics in human lungs, placentas, and blood. And while scientists are still uncovering the long-term impact, there’s growing concern that chronic exposure could contribute to inflammation, hormone disruption, and other systemic health issues.

3. If It's Not Certified Safe, It May Carry Toxins

Here’s where it gets riskier: many of these brushed polyester fabrics aren’t just shedding plastic, they're also treated with chemicals like formaldehyde, plasticizers, and PFAS that can hitch a ride on those fibers.
If the fabric isn’t certified non-toxic, those shed microfibers may carry harmful substances that come into contact with your skin, or worse, enter your body through inhalation or absorption over time.

Why Bonta Never Uses Brushed Polyester

At Bonta, we refused to cut corners. We knew that true performance and wellness go hand-in-hand, so we committed to sourcing only certified non-toxic, high-performance fabrics that are:
  • Soft without abrasion
  • Durable without microplastic overload
Our fabrics are tested by globally recognized safety standards, and they’re engineered to feel incredible while protecting your health, the environment, and your long-term performance.

What You Can Do

If you’re shopping for activewear, here’s what we recommend:
  • Check the label. Ask what gives the fabric its softness.
  • Be cautious with brushed polyester unless the brand clearly communicates its safety standards.
Soft doesn’t always mean safe and with something as personal as the clothes on your skin, knowledge is power.
