As I dove deep into textile science while building Bonta, I uncovered some surprising truths—especially about fabrics that feel incredibly soft to the touch.
One common technique used by many leading brands is called brushing, and it’s especially popular with polyester fabrics. In this process, the surface of the fabric is scraped with fine metal bristles to rough up the fibers and create a soft, cotton-like hand feel. It’s what gives brushed polyester its cozy, velvety texture.

But here’s the problem:
Brushing physically breaks down the surface of the fibers, causing increased shedding—often in the form of microplastics.
And unless those materials are certified safe from harmful substances (as ours are at Bonta), those microplastics can contain or absorb toxins that may pose long-term health risks, especially with repeated skin contact, inhalation, or environmental exposure.
At Bonta, we took a different path. We use only the cleanest, highest-performing materials on the planet, all certified free of harmful substances, so you never have to trade health for comfort or performance. Our Italian Polyamide is 40% stronger than Polyester which will reduce breakage leading to the shedding of microplastics.
So, while that soft brushed finish may feel nice at first, it could be doing the opposite of what you want your activewear to do: keep you safe while helping you perform at your best.
